What a USP is
The term comes from Rosser Reeves, an advertising executive, who set out three tests in his 1961 book Reality in Advertising. The proposition must offer the customer a specific benefit. It must be one competitors do not or cannot offer. And it must be strong enough to move buyers.
That makes a USP different from a slogan. A slogan can be a mood. A USP is a claim that a customer can check.
Four classic USP examples
| Brand | The promise | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| M&M’s | “Melts in your mouth, not in your hand.” | A concrete benefit that a plain chocolate rival could not claim. |
| FedEx | Absolutely, positively overnight. | One promise, a deadline and a clear rival: slower mail. |
| Avis | “We try harder.” | It turned being second in its market into a reason to choose it. |
| Domino’s | Delivery in 30 minutes or less, or it’s free. | A time limit plus a guarantee: easy to check and costly to fake. |
Eight USP examples for small businesses
These are written for illustration. They are not real companies, and the numbers are examples.
| Business | USP | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Emergency plumber | A plumber at your door within 90 minutes, or the call-out is free. | Specific, measurable and risk-free. |
| Bookkeeper | Your books closed by the 5th of every month, or that month is free. | A date the client can hold you to. |
| Landscaper | The same crew every visit, so you never explain your garden twice. | Names a pain that rivals ignore. |
| Dental clinic | Evening and Saturday appointments, with the price in writing before we start. | Two benefits, both checkable. |
| IT support | A named engineer who picks up your call within five minutes. | Replaces a faceless ticket queue with a person. |
| Cleaning service | Not happy? We re-clean within 24 hours, free. | A guarantee with a deadline. |
| Freelance accountant | One flat monthly fee. No hourly billing, ever. | Removes the thing clients fear most. |
| Marketing consultant | We only do one thing: turn the leads you already have into booked calls. | A narrow focus that is easy to repeat. |
How to write your own USP
- Ask five recent customers why they chose you, and write down their words.
- Find the specific benefit that came up most often.
- Run the swap test: put a rival’s name in place of yours. If the sentence is still true, it is not a USP.
- Add proof or a guarantee, such as a number, a deadline or a refund.
- Write it as one sentence with no jargon. “Quality”, “service” and “passion” are not benefits.
From weak to strong
| Weak | Stronger |
|---|---|
| We offer quality service at fair prices. | Quotes within 24 hours, at a fixed price, or we pay for your time. |
| Passionate about our customers. | Every client gets one named contact who replies the same day. |
| Your trusted partner in growth. | We find the one thing capping your growth before you spend another dollar on ads. |
Test your USP
Answer yes or no to each. Fewer than four yeses means the USP needs work before it goes in an ad.
- Can a customer repeat it after one reading?
- Could a rival honestly say the same thing?
- Can you prove it, with a number, a guarantee or a result?
- Does it matter to the people you most want to buy?
- Do your website, ads and sales calls all say it?

The Blind Spot USP & Positioning audit is 20 questions about the clarity of your USP, your proof and differentiation, your awareness of competitors, and how consistent your message is. It takes about ten minutes and ends with the one fix worth making first.
Questions
Common questions
What is a USP?
A unique selling proposition is the one specific reason a customer should choose you over the alternatives, stated so that a competitor cannot honestly claim the same.
What makes a good USP?
It names a specific benefit, it is something rivals do not offer, and a customer can check it. A promise with a number, a deadline or a guarantee usually passes all three.
What is the difference between a USP and a value proposition?
A value proposition describes the value you deliver to a customer. A USP picks the part of that value that is different from the alternatives. Every USP is part of a value proposition, but not the other way round.
Can a service business have a USP?
Yes. Speed, a named person, a fixed price and a guarantee are the usual levers for services, and all of them appear in the examples above.
How long should a USP be?
One sentence a customer can repeat after one reading. If it needs a second sentence to be understood, it is two ideas.
What is a brand audit?
A review of how a brand looks, sounds and is perceived across its touchpoints. The Blind Spot positioning audit is narrower: it scores your message and your position against competitors, not your visual identity.
