Growth · one page, one number
Business growth plan: a one-page template and how to write one
A business growth plan says where growth will come from, what you will do, who does it and how you will know it worked. Most fail because they try to fix everything. This one starts with the single area holding you back.

What a business growth plan is
A business growth plan is a short document for one period and one goal. A lender’s business plan is a different document. A growth plan answers four questions: what number are you aiming for, what is holding you back, what will you do about it, and how will you check.
The step most plans skip is the second one. Without it you add ads and hires everywhere and hope something moves. Start from the stage that caps growth and the plan can be short.
A one-page business growth plan template
Copy this table into a document and fill in the last column. The examples show the level of detail to aim for.
| Section | Question | Your answer |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | What number, by what date? | Example: 9 new customers a month by 31 March. |
| Constraint | Which stage is weakest: message, leads, sales or customers? | Take the free checklist to find out. |
| Evidence | Which measure shows it? | Example: 30 leads a month, 6 sales, 20% close rate. |
| Actions | What will you do this quarter to lift that stage? Three at most. | |
| Owners | Who does each action, and by when? | |
| Measure | Which number tells you it worked, and when will you check? | |
| Review date | When do you rewrite the plan? |
How to write it
- Set the goal as one number with a date.
- Find the constraint. The free checklist scores four areas in about five minutes.
- Choose three actions at most, all aimed at that one area.
- Give each action an owner and a date.
- Check the measure monthly. Rewrite the plan each quarter.
An example plan
This is an invented example for a small service business. The numbers are illustrative.
| Section | Entry |
|---|---|
| Goal | Go from 6 to 9 new customers a month by 31 March. |
| Constraint | Sales. Leads wait two days for a quote. |
| Evidence | 30 leads a month, 6 sales, a 20% close rate. |
| Actions | 1. Reply to every lead within two hours. 2. Send a three-step follow-up to quiet leads. 3. Use one fixed-price quote template. |
| Owners | Owner for 1 and 3 by 15 November. Office manager for 2 by 30 November. |
| Measure | Close rate to 30%, checked on the first of each month. |
| Review | 31 January. |
Business growth stages
Neil Churchill and Virginia Lewis described five stages of small business growth in the Harvard Business Review in 1983. Knowing your stage tells you which problems to expect.
| Stage | What it looks like |
|---|---|
| Existence | Getting customers and delivering the product. |
| Survival | Covering costs and staying cash-positive. |
| Success | Stable and profitable. The owner decides whether to grow or hold. |
| Take-off | Growing fast. Delegation and cash control become the issue. |
| Resource maturity | Systems, planning and a management team keep the gains. |
Business growth strategies
Igor Ansoff’s growth matrix, published in 1957, groups growth strategies into four. Each suits a different weak area.
| Strategy | What it means | Fits when |
|---|---|---|
| Market penetration | Sell more of what you have to the customers you already serve. | Your message, sales or retention is the weak area. |
| Market development | Take the same offer to a new type of customer or place. | Your current market is saturated or too small. |
| Product development | Sell something new to your existing customers. | You have loyal customers and unused trust. |
| Diversification | A new offer for a new market. | Rarely first: it carries the most risk. |
For most small businesses the first move is penetration: fix the message, the leads, the sales or the repeat business you already have before opening a new front.

Questions
Common questions
What should a business growth plan include?
A goal with a number and a date, the area that is holding growth back, up to three actions, who does each one and by when, and the measure that shows it worked.
How long should a business growth plan be?
One page is enough for most small businesses. If it needs more, you probably have more than one goal.
What is the difference between a business plan and a growth plan?
A business plan describes a whole business, often for a lender or investor. A growth plan covers one period and one goal, and says what you will change to reach it.
How often should I review the plan?
Check the measure monthly and rewrite the plan each quarter. If the weak area has moved, the plan should move with it.
What are the stages of business growth?
Neil Churchill and Virginia Lewis described five in the Harvard Business Review in 1983: existence, survival, success, take-off and resource maturity. The table above summarizes each.
What is the best growth strategy for a small business?
It depends on where you are weakest. The Ansoff matrix lists four routes: sell more of the same to the same market, enter new markets, add new products, or diversify. Selling more to the market you already serve is usually the lowest-risk place to start.
