What a USP is

The term comes from Rosser Reeves, an advertising executive, who set out three tests in his 1961 book Reality in Advertising. The proposition must offer the customer a specific benefit. It must be one competitors do not or cannot offer. And it must be strong enough to move buyers.

That makes a USP different from a slogan. A slogan can be a mood. A USP is a claim that a customer can check.

Domino’sDelivery in 30 minutes or less, or it’s free.A time limit plus a guarantee: easy to check and costly to fake.

Eight USP examples for small businesses

These are written for illustration. They are not real companies, and the numbers are examples.

How to write your own USP

  1. Ask five recent customers why they chose you, and write down their words.
  2. Find the specific benefit that came up most often.
  3. Run the swap test: put a rival’s name in place of yours. If the sentence is still true, it is not a USP.
  4. Add proof or a guarantee, such as a number, a deadline or a refund.
  5. Write it as one sentence with no jargon. “Quality”, “service” and “passion” are not benefits.

Test your USP

Answer yes or no to each. Fewer than four yeses means the USP needs work before it goes in an ad.

  • Can a customer repeat it after one reading?
  • Could a rival honestly say the same thing?
  • Can you prove it, with a number, a guarantee or a result?
  • Does it matter to the people you most want to buy?
  • Do your website, ads and sales calls all say it?

Questions

Common questions

What is a USP?

A unique selling proposition is the one specific reason a customer should choose you over the alternatives, stated so that a competitor cannot honestly claim the same.

What makes a good USP?

It names a specific benefit, it is something rivals do not offer, and a customer can check it. A promise with a number, a deadline or a guarantee usually passes all three.

What is the difference between a USP and a value proposition?

A value proposition describes the value you deliver to a customer. A USP picks the part of that value that is different from the alternatives. Every USP is part of a value proposition, but not the other way round.

Can a service business have a USP?

Yes. Speed, a named person, a fixed price and a guarantee are the usual levers for services, and all of them appear in the examples above.

How long should a USP be?

One sentence a customer can repeat after one reading. If it needs a second sentence to be understood, it is two ideas.

What is a brand audit?

A review of how a brand looks, sounds and is perceived across its touchpoints. The Blind Spot positioning audit is narrower: it scores your message and your position against competitors, not your visual identity.
